WAM Abu Dhabi, June 11th, 2012 (WAM) -- The dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol are well documented. Even one drink can impair a driver's ability to react quickly in an emergency situation, commented a UAE Paper.
"Sadly, though, there appears to be a section of drivers who see nothing wrong in having a tipple or two and then getting behind the wheel. It's an attitude that results in accidents and death and it is also illegal", Gulf News said in its today's editorial.
The UAE has zero tolerance for alcohol while operating a motor vehicle. Even one drink is one too many.
"Clearly there is need for public awareness to change this attitude. If one can afford to buy a drink, one should also be able to hire a taxi. Current traffic laws stipulate that drunk drivers will face a jail term of between one month and a year and/or a fine between Dh20,000 and Dh30,000. Despite these penalties, there are motorists still willing to take the risk," the paper added.
Driving licenses should be suspended for a year and the police should double their efforts in fighting this social scourge. They need to conduct high-visibility random roadside checks near nightclubs and other facilities where alcohol is served, the editorial suggested.
