Honoured citizens, UAE Paper
2012-05-30 10:51:07
WAM Abu Dhabi, May 30th, 2012 (WAM) -- The granting of citizenship to the children of Emirati mothers is a watershed in forward thinking policy and the initiative from the President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, deserves unreserved congratulations and plaudits, commented a UAE daily.

"Women married to foreigners can now extend the benefits of citizenship to the children and enjoy the same rights as men, something that has been close to the hearts of the leadership and stands as a shining example of true equality," the "Khaleej Times" said in its today's editorial.

There are few nations who offer this privilege and the UAE has again reset the standard for the role of women in the nation's progress and their value in the general scheme of things. Major General Nasser Al Awadhi Al Menhali, Assistant Undersecretary for Naturalisation, Residency and Outlets in the Ministry of Interior, made a very pertinent point when he said that mothers are participating in the progress of this country actively and are an intrinsic part of it. No one can argue that fact and extending the right of citizenship is a genuine way of not just promoting the equality of men and women but also acknowledging their being part of the national fabric.

This first ceremony is to be succeeded by others in different Emirates and provides to these boys and girls to be fine examples for generations to come. This healthy precedent is so indicative of the progressive policies in this country and the fact that it is readily to take speedy action on its promises.

Till now most countries allow a courtesy residency for the children of women married to foreigners but not citizenship. In some nations women even lose their citizenship once they are married to foreigners. Against this background," this is a groundbreaking step by the UAE and will afford over a hundred children in this first round the opportunity to be upstanding and proud Emiratis ready to do their best for the country. It is also a welcome addition to the pool of talent in the nation where welfare of all is a frontline consideration." "Every such step becomes a strong brick in the nation building process and signposts an even brighter future," the paper concluded.
