WAM Dubai, May 10th, 2012 (WAM)--Dubai Municipality's Environment Department will mark World Migratory Bird Day on May 12- 13, under the theme: The Migratory Birds and People....Together through Time.
World Migratory Bird Day is a global initiative devoted to celebrating migratory birds and for promoting actions for their conservation worldwide. It is being organised by the Secretariats of the African-Eurasian Migratory Water bird Agreement (AEWA) and the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) - two international wildlife treaties administered by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) - and other partners. WMBD was initiated in 2006.
Eng. Hamdan Al Shaer, Director of Environment Department at the Civic Body said the celebration aims at raising awareness level among individuals in the community on risks and threats that face the migratory bird, and highlighting the changes on uses of lands ensuing from human activities and their negative effects on the birds.
"Many species are disappearing because of human activities and there are lot of species that are in danger of becoming extinct. These losses are irreversible and this decline of biodiversity endangers our own livelihood," he said.
