AED 3 billion provided by UAE Red Crescent for humanitarian purposes

WAM Abu Dhabi, Nov 24th, 2009 (WAM) -- In the framework of the directives of H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE President, the initiatives of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and support of HH General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in the Western Region and President of the Red Crescent Authority, UAE is exerting a lot of efforts to curb the effects and consequences of disasters and humanitarian crises in many regions and countries in the world, which claimed the lives of thousands of people.

Thanks to UAE efforts, the Red Crescent Authority is the first to meet the distress call and arrives at the scene when a disaster strikes anywhere in the world along with providing assistance to all the needy inside and outside the country.

The value of assistance provided during the past years amounted to AED three billion while the value of its assistance to the victims and the needy from the beginning of 2009 until October, reached nearly AED 450 million.

The Authority's programs in the country include a number of critical areas, such as, humanitarian and medical assistance, social guarantees, students' sponsorship, prisoners welfare, rehabilitation of the disabled besides support programs for foundations, local projects, charity campaigns that target supporting vulnerable and needy families living in remote districts, whereas the authority tries to reach them in their respective regions to provide them basic necessities, in addition to seasonal projects that include break fasting, Zakat , Eid sacrifices and clothes and the conduct of pilgrims to the Holy Mosque.

H.E. Ahmed Humaid Al Mazrouei, Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Authority, in a press statement on the occasion of the 38th National Day said that under the guidance of wise leadership of President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE holds a prominent position among donor countries. The country is responsible for maintaining the human dignity particularly since the international scene today is facing many challenges as a result of increasing disasters, the information revolution and rapid changes.

The Authority's aid operations during the past few years included 95 countries all over the world including Palestine, Iraq, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan, countries of Africa and a number of countries in Asia.

The RCA's developmental projects in Palestine came to the fore in terms of the number of implemented projects and the value of their expenses whereas they included building and maintaining people's destroyed homes, establishing and Rehabilitating health, educational and service institutions besides houses of worship all over Palestine.

Moreover, RCA's programs for the orphans are witnessing a continuous expansion, the number of orphans sponsored by the RCA inside and outside the country reached around 52 thousand orphans and their yearly sponsorship expenses reached AED 110 million.

The RCA works on providing orphans' health, educational and social needs, besides other services that support them and their families.
