UAE, France Presidents hold talks

WAM Abu Dhabi, May 26th, 2009 (WAM)--President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, held talks today with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in presence of General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

Sheikh Khalifa welcomed the visiting French president and his entourage, hoping that the visit would boost the cooperation and partnership between the UAE and France. The two presidents discussed ways of enhancing the bilateral relations, particularly, in the political, economical, militarily, cultural, tourism, investment and scientific areas.

The UAE president stressed that the UAE was keen to bolster joint cooperation between the two friendly countries, citing the growing relations with France due to the support of president Sarkozy. He reiterated the mutual visits of officials between the UAE and France would further open new horizons for cooperation and partnership.

He added that the inauguration of "the maritime peace camp" in Abu Dhabi today, "represents a new phase of cooperation between the two countries in line with the Joint Defence Treaty, which was previously signed between the two countries". Sheikh Khalifa noted that the camp would contribute in security and stability of this strategic region.

Sheikh Khalifa lauded the cultural cooperation between the UAE and France, citing the Louvre Museum at Al Saadiyat Island and the inauguration of Sorbonne University-Abu Dhabi branch.

He added that the visit of French president and the talks held today were the "step forward to bolstering the joint cooperation and friendship, which will have far reaching effects in realising interests of the two peoples".

On his part, Sarkozy thanked Khalifa for good reception, commending the wise leadership of Khalifa and the relations between the two countries. "The UAE occupies a prestigious position in the world due to its balanced policies, which contribute in security and stability".

He added that the maritime peace camp in Abu Dhabi "is a message of peace to the whole region and will contribute in safeguarding security and stability of the region, as well as training of the UAE Naval forces, two become one of the most formidable forces in the region and the world".

Sarkozy referred to the economic, cultural, scientific and technological cooperation between the UAE and France, adding that "we and the French people admire this model of cooperation with the UAE, a country which is open to the world economically and culturally".

Sheikh Khalifa hosted a banquet in favour of Sarkozy and his entourage.
