Sharjah Ruler meets Exeter University vice-chancellor

WAM SHARJAH, Apr. 3rd, 2009: H.H Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, UAE Supreme Council member, ruler of Sharjah, President of the University of Sharjah and the American University in Sharjah (AUS) on Friday received Professor Steve Smith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter Professor Steve Smith.

The meeting, at the Sultan Al-Qassimi Center for Gulf Studies, discussed the close academic and research relations between Sharjah's universities and the University of Exeter.

Later, Sheikh Sultan, who is a graduate of Exeter, and Prof. Smith took part in The University of Exeter Gulf alumni meeting which was held in celebration of the growing links between the Gulf and the UK's University of the Year in 2008) at the Sultan Al-Qassimi Center for Gulf Studies.

In his speech at the ceremony, Sheikh Sultan urged for support for the University of Exeter and its alumni who he said included many current leaders.

For his part, Prof. Smith expressed his enormous pleasure to be in the Gulf again and to meet some of the many alumni and friends of the University of Exeter living and working in the Gulf region.

He also expressed gratitude to Sheikh Sultan for hosting this event and for his support to the University of Exeter which was the Times Higher Education University of the Year 2008.

Last year, the University admitted Sheikh Sultan into the University Of Exeter College Of Benefactors, which honors individuals who have made a major contribution to the University. He obtained a DPhil in 1985 and an honorary doctorate in 1993.

The University of Exeter is one of the UK's top 20 leading universities. The University has more than 58,000 alumni living in 150 different countries including the Middle East and Gulf region.
