Khalifa puts off older vehicles' ban

Nov 30, 2008 - 07:46 -

WAM Abu Dhabi, 30th Nov. 2008 (WAM) -- President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan today deferred until further notice enforcement of the ministerial resolution no 535 for 2008 on ban of registration of light vehicles older than 20 years.

The resolution was scheduled to go into force as of Monday, 1st December 2008.

Announcing the presidential directive, Interior Minister Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan said the President's order to postpone the implementation of the resolution aimed at granting low-income owners of cars ample time to find adequate alternatives for the cars which will go off the road under the resolution.

He said the timely move by the President would give the enforcement authorities enough room to conduct further study and coordination between criteria put forward by the National Transport Authority and other technical requirements for testing and licensing vehicles in order to come out with a common, comprehensive executive regulations.

This, he stressed, would ensure more efficiency upon enforcement of the resolution and achieve the aspired goals.
